I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about my shi*t.
Iconic words spoken by an iconic mind.
Hazel eyes Badu. I salute you Queen.
These words embraced and quoted by artists around the world from up and coming indie acts like Beyonce G. Knowles all the way up to massive superstars like Jesi Rae of dearjesirae.com(coming soon?)
Whomever we are, whoever we reach we are all artists.
Sensitive about our sh*t.
But like, why tho?
Sure.
I understand.
We're afraid of rejection.
Our art is our baby, rejecting it would be rejecting us.
rejection don't feel good.
but like, seriously.
W H Y ?
For me, I've learned that I am super judgmental. Not intentionally but automatically.
I judge everyone's art. In every form. Before I notice beauty, I see error. Before I notice passion and effort, I see ways to improve. Before I notice a soul bravely and vulnurably poured onto a canvas, I see avenues to perfection.
That's just what I do when I see art, in all its forms on all of it's mediums.
so I assume that is how everyone views art, in all its forms on all of its mediums.
and that makes me sensitve.
when I produce something that I'm proud of, that makes me understand and appreciate my worth, I begin anticipating how I will be picked apart. Shredded to pieces, surrounded by reasons I'm not good enough. Answers on how it could have been better. Tools on which to make it perfect.
Because that is how the human ego works.
Maybe the same can be said for every artist who is sensitive about their sh*t. Or maybe it's just me.
Maybe our sensitivity is just as much about projection as well as our insecurities to be vulnerable.
Maybe Miss Knowles isn't an up and coming indie act.
Maybe DearJesiRae.com is coming later than sooner.
And maybe Erica Badu wasn't the first to proclaim she was an artist sensitive about her sh*t.
Maybe Badu actually heard the line from Tyrone.
So many maybes. too many babies. not enough crazies.
As an artist, the only thing we can be sure of is the now. Trust the now. Trust that you poured your all into your craft, into your content, into your art and in the now you are the best you have ever been.
Forsaking all others, you created for you.
and that is good enough, every single time.
Namaste.
